Understanding trauma responses
After an overwhelming experience, the mind and body can continue responding as though danger is still present. This may involve intrusive memories, nightmares, avoidance, emotional numbness, irritability, shame, difficulty trusting others or feeling constantly alert.
These responses are not signs of weakness. They can be understandable attempts to survive and adapt. Therapy helps make sense of what is happening while supporting greater safety, choice and flexibility in daily life.
A paced, trauma-informed approach
Trauma work does not begin by forcing a detailed retelling of the experience. Early sessions may focus on safety, stabilisation, emotional regulation, sleep, grounding and understanding triggers. Any deeper processing is considered collaboratively and only when appropriate.
Treatment may draw on cognitive behavioural, acceptance-based, mindfulness-informed and narrative approaches according to your needs. Fern Up does not advertise EMDR and will discuss referral options if a different specialist treatment is indicated.
