Migration and cultural adjustment
Migration stress and mental health: when starting again feels harder than expected
Moving countries can bring safety, opportunity and hope while also creating loss, uncertainty and pressure. Mixed feelings are common, and support can make adjustment less isolating.
Why migration can feel emotionally demanding
Migration changes more than an address. Familiar routines, language, work status, family roles, friendships and a sense of belonging may all shift at once. Even a planned move can involve grief for the people, places and identity left behind.
Stress may also come from visa uncertainty, financial pressure, finding work, learning unfamiliar systems, discrimination, separation from family or feeling responsible for succeeding quickly.
Signs that extra support may be useful
Adjustment takes time, but support may help when worry, sadness, irritability, isolation, sleep problems or relationship conflict persist and start interfering with everyday life. Some people also notice that earlier difficult experiences become more present after the immediate demands of relocation settle.
- Feeling constantly on edge or unable to switch off
- Withdrawing from people or activities
- Persistent low mood, guilt or loss of hope
- Conflict linked with changed family or work roles
- Feeling caught between cultures or disconnected from identity
How culturally responsive therapy can help
Therapy can provide a place to name both the gains and losses of migration without treating either side as the whole story. Work may focus on practical coping, emotional regulation, grief, confidence, relationships, identity and building a life that reflects your values in the new context.
Speaking in Farsi may make it easier to express experiences connected with family, childhood and culture. Shared language can support understanding, while good therapy still remains curious about your individual story rather than assuming that all migrants have the same experience.
