How does an online psychology appointment work?

Telehealth psychology uses video or another agreed remote method to provide psychological care when an in-person visit is not necessary or practical.

Before the first online appointment

The psychologist will usually confirm your identity, current location, contact details, privacy and whether telehealth is appropriate for your needs. An emergency contact or local support information may be discussed where clinically relevant.

You will need a private space, reliable internet and a device with audio and video. Headphones can improve privacy, but they do not make a room private if other people can enter or overhear.

What happens during the session

A telehealth psychology session follows many of the same principles as an in-person appointment. You discuss your concerns, history, goals and current needs, and the psychologist works with you on an assessment and treatment approach.

Telehealth can involve conversation, written exercises, shared resources and between-session practice. The exact approach depends on the concern, your preferences and the psychologist's clinical judgement.

When telehealth may not be the right option

Online therapy is not suitable in every circumstance. Limited privacy, unreliable technology, immediate safety risk, severe acute symptoms, some assessment needs or the need for physical examination may make another service or face-to-face care more appropriate.

  • Choose a quiet, private location
  • Keep your phone available in case the video connection fails
  • Close other apps and silence notifications
  • Have water, tissues and any worksheets nearby
  • Tell the psychologist if privacy or safety changes during the call
