What is the difference between a psychologist and a clinical psychologist in Australia?

Both psychologists and clinical psychologists are registered health practitioners. The main formal difference is an additional area of practice endorsement, not a simple measure of who will be the best fit for every person.

Psychologist is a protected title

In Australia, a person must be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia to use the title psychologist. Registration involves approved education, supervised practice, professional standards and ongoing requirements.

A registered psychologist may work with a wide range of concerns depending on their competence, training and experience. The title alone does not tell you every method they use or every population they support.

What clinical psychology endorsement means

A clinical psychologist is a registered psychologist who also holds an area of practice endorsement in clinical psychology. The endorsement recognises approved postgraduate clinical training and supervised practice in that area.

Only psychologists who hold the relevant endorsement may use an endorsed title such as clinical psychologist. You can check a practitioner's current registration and endorsement on the Ahpra public register.

Which type of psychologist should I choose?

Qualifications matter, but therapeutic fit also depends on the concern you want help with, the psychologist's relevant experience, language, cultural understanding, availability and whether their way of working feels collaborative and respectful.

It is reasonable to ask a psychologist about their registration, experience with your concern, therapeutic approaches, fees, Medicare arrangements and how progress will be reviewed.

  • Check current Ahpra registration
  • Look for experience relevant to your needs
  • Consider language and cultural context
  • Ask about approach, fees and availability
  • Notice whether you feel safe enough to speak openly
